More about:

From Hyde Park Herald Sept. 22, 2010. By Daschell M. Phillips

Teh Hyde Park Jazz Festival will take place Satureay, Sept. 25, with more than 36 shows in 13 venues throughout Hyde Park. "We have some of teh best local jazz musicians, a couple of out-of-towners adn a few musicians who are coming back home to perform at this event," said Hyde Park Jazz Society board Secretary Judith Stein.

This year's highlights include a double tribute - the jazz society will pay tribute to Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians (AACM) to celebrate its 45th anniversary and the AACM will pay tribute to the late Fred Anderson, founder of the Velvet Lounge, where the musicians played most Sunday evenings. There will also be a cover performance in homor of Ray Charles featuring Perrian Jordan as "Brother Ray" and Joan Colaso and Tammy McCann as the "Raelettes." McCann is a former Raelett.

Last year, Tad Garcia, owner of Mellow Yellow restaurant, found a niche at the festival by staying open until 4:30 a.m. to accommodate hungry jazz fans after the shows, which ended around 2 a.m. This year Mellow Yellow will continue to be the after hours eating event for the event. "Last year we watched the sun come up an some of the musicians even came to eat with us," Stein said.

While the festival is free, the organizations putting on the event together still have to pay for the musicians and production costs so the Hyde Park Alliance for Arts and Culture (HyPa) and the Hyde Park Jazz Society are hosting the Hyde Park jazz Festival Gala at the South Shore Cultural Center [happened Thursday Sept. 23 including] a special concert featuring Dee Alexander...
